Bruges Christmas Market 2026 locations, opening hours and practical tips

Whoever says "the Bruges Christmas market" actually means two Christmas markets. One stands on the Markt, beneath the Belfry. The other is on Simon Stevinplein, closer to the shopping streets. They are within walking distance of each other and both belong to Wintergloed.

Christmas market stalls on the Markt in Bruges on a rainy winter day

We are Kevin and Heidi, and we have been welcoming guests at Enjoy Bruges since 2017. Our advice is not to rush from one square to the other. Combine both locations with part of the historic city and visit at least one market after sunset as well. That gives you the atmosphere many visitors come to Bruges for, without your whole day turning into one long queue.

Short answer: the Christmas markets on the Markt and Simon Stevinplein are open from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. From Sunday to Thursday the official hours run from 11:00 to 22:00, and on Friday and Saturday from 11:00 to 23:30. On New Year's Eve they stay open until 03:00.

Bruges has two Christmas markets

The two locations give you a good reason not to stay on just one square. They are close enough together to walk between, but on the way you pass streets and buildings that are part of the experience.

Christmas market on the Markt

The Markt is the best-known square in Bruges. The Belfry, the step gables and the Provincial Court form the backdrop. That makes this location feel immediately like the classic image people expect of Christmas in Bruges.

Do not just look at the stalls. Walk past the facades first, stroll over to the Burg for a moment, and come back later once the lights are shown to full effect. The Markt is lovely during the day, but the square changes a great deal after sunset.

This is also the spot that can get busy during popular weekends. If you mainly want to take photos or look around calmly, it is better to come earlier in the day and return briefly in the evening for the atmosphere.

Christmas market on Simon Stevinplein

Simon Stevinplein lies near Steenstraat, so it fits easily into a shopping stop. The square is smaller than the Markt and feels different spatially. Which location you enjoy most depends on your preference and on how busy it is at that particular moment.

The official tourism information describes both markets together and does not give a fixed list of stalls per location. So do not rely on old blog posts that present a theme or offering from a previous edition as certain. The line-up can change.

Our tip: use Simon Stevinplein as a starting point or a stop along the way, and save the Markt for when it gets dark. The other way round works too, of course, if your stay or restaurant booking makes more sense that way.

Official opening hours for the Bruges Christmas market 2026

According to Visit Bruges, both Christmas markets are open from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.

Day Official hours
Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 22:00
Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 23:30
New Year's Eve Open until 03:00

These hours were checked while preparing this article. Check the official Christmas market page shortly before you leave.

Walking route past both Christmas markets

A simple route starts on Simon Stevinplein. Walk via Steenstraat towards the Markt. Do not count only the pure walking time: shops, facades and side streets mean you easily end up lingering longer along the way.

From the Markt, the Burg is a logical short detour. After that you can walk via Blinde Ezelstraat and Groenerei towards Rozenhoedkaai. That way the Christmas market becomes part of a city walk instead of the only goal of the day.

If you also want to skate, plan King Albert I Park as a separate stop around 't Zand. Try not to cram the Christmas markets and the ice rink into a tight schedule. One queue or a longer hot drink stop makes a plan like that unnecessarily stressful straight away.

When is the best time to visit the Christmas market

There is no time of day when the Christmas market is always quiet. Weekends, school holidays, the weather and groups in the city all have an influence. Even so, you can improve your chances of a more pleasant visit.

  • Come on a weekday when your schedule allows it.
  • Visit one market shortly after opening to look around calmly.
  • Save the second location for the evening lights.
  • Do not plan meals right at the busiest moment if you are travelling with children.
  • Use a dry spell for the squares and move a museum to the rainy hours.

Anyone staying overnight does not have to do everything in the same evening. That is the biggest practical advantage. You can visit one market on Saturday and the other on Sunday, or look around calmly during the day and only come back in the evening for the lights.

How to turn it into a two-night stay

Arrival evening: check in, eat something and take a short walk past the Markt, the Burg and Rozenhoedkaai. Choose one Christmas market without trying to work through the whole city.

Full day: visit the main sights in the morning. Choose one museum or the ice rink after lunch. Go to the other Christmas market after sunset and then have a relaxed dinner.

Departure day: walk through Sint-Anna or along the ramparts, pick up something local and perhaps go back to your favourite square. With a later departure you can also add an extra museum or a stretch of the Damme Canal.

Practical tips for families and groups

Agree a recognisable meeting point when you arrive. On the Markt, a group can easily get separated when everyone stops at a different stall. Do not put gloves on children that have to come off for every bite; a small practical detail makes a big difference in the cold.

With children, plan one clear activity alongside the Christmas market. Skating or a short museum visit is often enough. With teenagers you can add a tasting or an evening walk, but keep some room free even then.

Travelling with six people? Book a restaurant in advance if you want to eat at a specific time. Walk flexibly before and after dinner. That way you avoid every part of the day depending on a single delay.

Where to stay with parking

Enjoy Bruges sits on the Damme Canal, 1.9 kilometres from the Markt. The four apartments are in one building and each has its own kitchen and living room. Free parking is about a two-minute walk away.

That means you can park the car on arrival and visit the historic centre on foot or by bike. For the current traffic and parking arrangements for Wintergloed, always check the official accessibility page; temporary arrangements can change from one edition to the next.

The apartments suit two to six guests, depending on the layout you choose. Compare them side by side and pick what suits your group.
